PLANET AGENDA REPORTS
Planet Agenda generates reports on specific issues in an effort to raise the general public awareness of our environmental challenges and opportunities. These reports are distributed by members of Planet Agenda Media as an adjunct to the Planet Agenda informative action website at www.planetagenda.com The purpose of these reports and our Media Group is to facilitate action within the community and provide compensation to those involved. During the course of a year, it is hoped that the number of environmentally aware people will greatly increase due to this effort. SUBJECT:
Elements
of Biodiversity
Report number: 105-1
Biodiversity is expressed in the vast diversity of all living things on the planet, including all variations, and the very complex assemblies of their communities and ecosystems. It is easy to understand how important this is to each of us! It involves everything about the interrelatedness of all life. Biodiversity is the fabric of our world and in its many connections, it is the very reason we exist. Without enough biodiversity, this web of life begins to perish, often in ways hard to perceive. This is already happening on a grand scale on the planet and this is why it is so important to learn more and to promote the understanding of how we can protect biodiversity. The dynamic interactions of different species within our life sphere are still being discovered, along with incredible medical benefits that are being derived from both plants and animals. For this reason, we must be aware of the aggressive result of bio-engineered seeds and their yet unknown effect on the diversity of our biosphere. The biodiversity of life that vanishes in the next few moments will be gone forever... that which remains will provide now limited options for the future of humanity.
FIVE IMPORTANT FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT BIODIVERSITY
ONE
Species are presently becoming extinct at the
highest rate in
known geological history.
TWO
Habitat destruction is a major force in the loss of biodiversity.
This is still occurring as a direct result of human activity.
THREE
Global climate change is causing change to ecosystem
compositions, sometimes leading to a cross-species effect that endangers little
understood, but
potentially large levels of, species co-existence.
FOUR
Essential
ecological functions that provide us with fresh water, healthy,
fertile soils and clean air are all directly attributed to activities involved in biodiversity.
As we continue to make species extinct, we continue to lessen our
opportunity of full life.
FIVE
Declining
species populations, (a forerunner to extinction), is occurring at an even faster rate
than species extinctions, and is an dangerous sign of approaching loss.
Ecologists working hard on rehabilitating and restoring damaged habitats need
our voting, letter writing and financial support to continue to produce guidelines for future
planet sustainability.
