THE EVOLUTION OF WHALES
Once they could crawl from the sea...
Two new studies suggest that whales are closely related to a group of hoofed animals that include pigs, sheep goats, cows and hippos. Scientists unearthed fossilized bones of two whales that lived on Earth 47 million years ago. The anklebones show that early whales still had hoofs on their front feet. They probably used the hoofs to crawl onto shore. "If you saw these animals in a zoo today, they’d look like a cross between a pig and a dog," one of the scientists, Hans Thewissen, told USA Today.
